11 reasons to be angry
1. Since 1960, the countries where 20% of the world’s richest people live have increased their share of the gross world product from 73% to 83%. These rich countries are now sixty times better off than those where the poorest 20% of the population live.2. 800 million people in the world are severely malnourished or hungry.
3. 40,000 children under the age of five die every day from malnutrition and lack of medicine. 33,000 children die every day in developing countries, mostly from easily preventable diseases. This is equivalent to dropping a bomb on Hiroshima.
4. 358 have a fortune equal to half the world’s population.
5. About 11 million people are homeless in the world. 100 million children live or work on the streets.
6. 37 million people displaced by violence or armed conflict, 80% of them women and children. More than 1 billion people – most of them children – either have no home or live in inadequate housing.
7. 400 million people live in a military dictatorship, propped up by multinational corporations that make huge profits from cheap labor.
8. 8.4 million children trapped in slavery, human trafficking, prostitution, debt bondage, pornography and other illegal activities. 22,000 children die each year in workplace accidents.
9. If the current rate of destruction continues at this rate, rainforests have a life span of no more than ten years. 80% of the ancient forests of our world were destroyed. Every two seconds, a piece of forest the size of a soccer field is cut down.
10. The world’s military spending is more than $800 billion a year.
11. The richest 200 people in the world have a combined fortune of more than $1 trillion – equal to the annual income of the poorest 47% of the world’s population, about 2.5 billion people.
