Mexico kills eleventh mayor in a year

On September 27, Bloomberg News Service reported that in Mexico an official who was acting mayor of the Michoacan state city of Tancitaro. The publication also noted that this is the eleventh killed mayor in this country in 2010.

According to Michoacan officials, the body of the murdered Gustavo Sanchez was found on a road in another city in that state, Uruapan. According to preliminary reports, the cause of the mayor’s death was that he was stoned to death.

In addition, the publication also reports that the assistant of Gustavo Sanchez was also killed.

At this time, authorities are not offering any theories as to who might be behind these crimes.

It is worth noting that Gustavo Sanchez took office as mayor of Tancitaro in December last year, after the mayor who preceded him resigned. According to information provided by the Mexican newspaper Milenio, which is actually referred to by Bloomberg, the previous mayor left his post due to constant threats from local criminal gangs.

Agence France-Presse notes that shortly after his appointment, Gustavo Sanchez signed a decree on the dismissal of 60 police officers. Their place was taken by the officers of the federal police.
